Revolution Results In Egypt Tourism Dropping By 28 Percent

According to a survey by the Egyptian Tourism Authority (ETA), tourism in Egypt has dropped by around 28 %, after the turmoil that took place in the North African country in the early part of the year. This rapid decline in Egypt tourism has been seen especially in the months from January to July. Egypt tourism boasted of 8.2 million visitors last year in the first half of last year i.e. 2010, but in that same period this year, the figure has dropped to 5.7 million. While most of the inbound tourists came from UK, France, Russia, Germany and Italy, visitors from Arab countries such as Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar. This decline in Arab tourism in Egypt has been mostly due to political instability in Yemen, Libya and Syria.

Tourism in Egypt has declined by less than 30%. According to the Egyptian Tourism Authority this figure is due to the revolution that took over Egypt at the beginning of the year. The decline in tourism in Egypt is attributed to the decline in UAE tourists by 58% over the six month period from January to July. This was conveyed by the Head of International tourism Sector, at the Egyptian Tourism Authority, Samy Mahmoud. There was a drop in tourists from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. The number of Arab Tourists, visiting Egypt declined by 18.6%. The fall in number of Arab visitors to Egypt was due to political uncertainties in Libya, Syria and Yemen. Even though political upheaval in Egypt had its impact on the share market and real estate, tourism sector was the most affected.

Syrian opposition leaders and figures will visit Egypt in September. Members of the Syrian community in Egypt announced that they will visit Egypt to meet the Egyptian political players and Al-Azhar leaders.
This visit will start on 8th September and the delegation will cover many things while they visit Egypt. This visit will claim to brief the Egyptians about the situation in Syria. The delegation will visit Egypt and will try to garner support for the opposition as they want to remove the regime of the current President. They also hope to visit and meet the foreign minister and supreme council of the armed forces.
Fahad al-Masry, political and media adviser for the assembly said that they chose Cairo as their starting point when they visit Egypt because of Egypt's political significance in the region. The Egypt visit will conclude on 13th September.
